About this place

The Covered Stairs of Sighișoara, also known as the Scholars' Stairs, is one of the most interesting landmarks in the medieval citadel. Built in 1642 to protect schoolchildren and churchgoers from rain, snow, and cold winds on their walk up to the School on the Hill, this wooden passage still retains its historic atmosphere.

Originally built with 300 steps, the staircase was modified in the 19th century and now features 175 steps. The wooden roof and natural light filtering through the beams create a memorable setting for photos as you walk up from the main citadel square.

Climbing through the wooden tunnel leads directly to the top of the hill, where you can explore the Church on the Hill, the old Evangelical cemetery, and the historic high school.

Good to know

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the wooden steps can become slippery during rain or freezing weather.
  • The climb may be challenging for visitors with reduced mobility or strollers.
  • At the top of the stairs, you will find the Church on the Hill and the Evangelical Cemetery, both major historic sites.
  • The staircase is illuminated at night, making it suitable for an evening walk.
