Dating back to the late 18th century during the Habsburg era, the Cacica Salt Mine stands out for the manual craftsmanship of its galleries. Excavated entirely by hand by Polish miners brought to Bucovina and local workers, the mine features an extraordinary underground labyrinth created without modern machinery.
Over 30 meters below ground, visitors can explore St. Varvara Chapel, a sanctuary carved completely out of a salt block, followed deeper down by an Orthodox chapel. Another highlight is the Salt Lake, a small artificial underground body of water dug into the salt layer that creates fascinating reflections.
The tourist route includes a subterranean ballroom, leisure spaces, and playground areas for children. The constant microclimate and aerosol-rich air provide natural therapeutic benefits for respiratory health.
