About this place

Located just a short distance from the medieval citadel of Sighisoara, the Breite Plateau hosts the largest wood-pasture reserve of ancient oaks in Central and Eastern Europe. This semi-natural habitat preserves hundreds of monumental trees, some aged between 400 and 800 years old.

Walking across the plateau offers a peaceful retreat into nature. The gentle trails are ideal for light hiking, cycling, or photography. The massive oaks, with their gnarled trunks and wide canopies, shape a memorable landscape in every season.

The area holds high ecological value, providing refuge for numerous bird species, protected insects, and plant species typical of the Transylvanian hills.

Good to know

  • Access to the plateau is open all year round.
  • You can reach the area on foot from Sighisoara via marked trails or by car up to the parking area near the reserve entrance.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the dirt paths can get muddy after rain.
  • There are no shops or services on the plateau, so bring your own water and snacks.
  • Lighting fires and damaging the ancient trees are strictly prohibited.
