About this place

Housed in one of the most impressive palaces in Oltenia, the Jean Mihail Palace, the Craiova Art Museum is a landmark for Romania's cultural heritage. Built at the turn of the 20th century in a Neoclassical style with Neo-Baroque elements, the building stands out for its elegant interiors decorated with Venetian mirrors, crystal chandeliers, and gilded plasterwork.

The museum's collection features valuable works by masters of Romanian painting, including Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ștefan Luchian, and Nicolae Tonitza. The exhibition space also encompasses decorative art pieces and works from European art schools.

The main highlight is the room dedicated to Constantin Brâncuși, displaying invaluable early works by the sculptor, such as The Kiss, Pride, The Thigh, and Head of a Child. A visit here offers clear insight into Brâncuși's artistic evolution prior to his Parisian period.
