The Sighisoara Citadel is the only inhabited medieval fortress in southeastern Europe. It was built in the 12th century by Saxon settlers on a 425-metre hill above the Tarnava Mare river valley. The fortified core is surrounded by thick walls and nine surviving towers, the most famous being the Clock Tower, which houses the History Museum and offers panoramic views. Inside the citadel are colourful houses, the Covered Staircase leading to the Church on the Hill and the old school street. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel preserves the medieval atmosphere of Transylvania and is home to craftsmen, museums and cultural events.
