Făgăraș Fortress is an impressive stronghold on the banks of the Olt River in the town of Făgăraș. Construction began in the mid-14th century and it was expanded in the 16th-17th centuries, becoming one of the largest and best-defended citadels in Transylvania. It served as the residence of Transylvanian princes and later as a military garrison, with thick brick walls, Renaissance bastions and a moat six metres deep. During the communist era the fortress was used as a political prison. Restored after 1990, it now houses the Țara Făgărașului Museum, a library and exhibition spaces, and functions as an important cultural centre.un important centru cultural.
