Colț Fortress, built in the 14th century by the Cândea noble family, stands on a rugged cliff at the entrance of the Râușor gorge, near Suseni village. Designed as a defense point and refuge, the fortification features a massive square tower and thick stone walls adapted to the steep terrain.
The ruins are widely recognized as the inspiration behind Jules Verne's novel The Castle in the Carpathians. Although only parts of the main tower and outer walls survive today, the location offers striking views of the Retezat Mountains and the Hațeg region.
The hike up to the fortress is short but steep, passing through a wooded hill. At the start of the trail sits the Cândea Church, another significant historical site worth visiting on the same trip.
