Alba Carolina Citadel in Alba Iulia is a star-shaped fortress built between 1715 and 1738 on the site of earlier medieval and Roman fortifications. It is the largest Vauban-style citadel in Romania, featuring star-shaped bastions, seven ornate baroque gates and massive walls. It was erected by the Habsburg authorities to strengthen the empire's border and protect Transylvania from Ottoman attacks. Inside the complex you will find the Union Hall, the Roman Catholic Cathedral and other historic buildings; today the pedestrian alleys, museums and exhibits make the fortress a major cultural and tourist hub.
