Black Church

The Black Church in Brașov is a landmark Gothic monument built by the Transylvanian Saxon community during the 14th-15th centuries. Measuring approximately 90 metres in length and 37 metres in width, it is the largest Gothic church in Romania and one of the most important Evangelical (Lutheran) houses of worship in the region. The building, dedicated to Saint Mary, is renowned for its dark facade - the result of pollution in the 19th century - and for its 6.3-ton bell and mechanical organ with 4,000 pipes, the largest instrument of its kind in Romania. Inside, visitors can admire a unique collection of Anatolian carpets, stained-glass windows and sculptures, and the building also hosts a museum and organ concerts.
