Built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, Prejmer fortified church is one of the best preserved of its kind in Eastern Europe. The complex consists of a Gothic church modeled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and a massive outer wall roughly 12 meters high and up to 5 meters thick that encloses an inner courtyard with 272 rooms for refugees. The defence system was ingenious, with ditches filled with water, bastions, reinforced gates and a multi-barrel gun nicknamed the “organ of death.” Located about 18 km from Brasov, the fortress is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
