Rasnov Fortress is perched on a limestone hill about 200 m above the town of Râşnov. It was built in the 14th century by Teutonic Knights and later enlarged by Transylvanian Saxons as a defensive system on the trade route between Transylvania and Wallachia. Within its walls there was a permanent settlement with over 30 houses, a school and a chapel. The fortress was protected by nine towers, two bastions and a drawbridge. The fortress is currently closed for restoration, and visitors can only access the gardens and outer courtyard.
